COMMUNICATION

At Norwood International High School we value our partnerships with families and recognise that these positive connections support students to flourish in their learning.

Research clearly demonstrates that when schools and families work collaboratively to support young people, their level of success is enhanced as is their wellbeing.

We maintain that effective communication and sharing of information is essential for successful partnerships and have a number of ways to facilitate this process:

Parent Communication with the School

Parents/caregivers/homestays are also encouraged to contact subject teachers, Learning Community Leaders, Curriculum Leaders or Support Services over any issues of concern. We recommend that the Connect teacher is the first line of communication, should you wish to discuss the progress of your child in the general life of the school.

Parents/caregivers/homestays may communicate with staff in the following ways:

  • Phone call:  8364 2299 (If staff are unavailable at the time, they will return calls as soon as convenient).

  • Emails can be found on the Contact Us page.

As staff often need to contact parents/caregivers/homestays by phone, up to date contact details are essential.

Please email Student Services (dl.0787.studentservices@schools.sa.edu.au) if any contact details change.

SMS Messaging

This is a text messaging service that notifies parents/caregivers/homestays of school events and absentee information.

Absences

In the event that a student is going to be absent or late, we request the parent/caregiver/homestay send an SMS to 0429 608 617 with the student’s name, year level and reason for absence.

Parent Portal

Daymap is the school’s web-based Learner Management System. The system enables staff, students and parents to access to a range of functions including timetables, attendance and absence details, lesson information, messaging, homework and assignment details. A unique username is required (not your email) which will be sent to you in the reset email.

The module that parents access – Parent Portal – is a secure system and access requires a unique username and password. Information on how to access Parent Portal is in the Parent information on the website.

We encourage all parents/caregivers/homestays to access Parent Portal on a weekly basis to monitor their child’s progress and specifically:

  • Attendance information

  • Homework

  • Due dates of assessment tasks

  • Confirmation of submission of work

  • Feedback for assessment tasks

  • Assessment results

  • Communication from the school.

Blog

The school blog enables our school community to be kept informed about up-and-coming events, reporting on past events/activities and celebrating student achievements. The blog is published on the school website and shared to our social media pages.

Sporting and Rowing News

Sporting and Rowing fixtures and event details are available on the school’s blog.

Calendar

The school advises of important events and dates via Parent Portal, SchoolStar and on the News & Events Page.

Social Media

The school encourages families to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for up-to-date news and achievements.

School Assemblies

Assemblies are organised by Student House Leaders and are held at least once a term in the Ivan Coward Hall. These events acknowledge and celebrate our student achievements, feature musical items and guest speakers and highlight important community or international events. Learning Community assemblies are held whenever necessary.

Parents/caregivers/homestays are formally invited to attend the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony and other end of year celebratory assemblies in Term 4.

Reporting to Students and Parents

All reports are published via Parent Portal (online) at the end of each term.

Parents/caregivers/homestays are encouraged to review the reports with their child and should they wish, may meet subject teachers at the Learning Conversation meetings.

In the middle school we assess the progress of our middle school students (Years 7-9) against specific criteria, based on the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, and issue comprehensive reports at the end of each semester. Progress Reports are written at the end of Terms 1 and 3.

In the senior years, we assess the progress according to specific SACE performance standards. For Year 11, (Stage 1 of the SACE), we issue comprehensive reports at the end of each semester. Progress Reports are written at the end of Terms 1 and 3. Year 12 students, (Stage 2 of the SACE), receive continuing progress reports which are issued at the end of Terms 1, 2, and 3. In Term 4, a School Component report is issued to indicate the final grade of the school assessed work. In mid-December, students will receive their SACE Certificate and SACE results for all subjects studied in the two year SACE program. IBDP students are assessed using 1-7 grades against IBDP criteria.

Learning Conversations provide valuable opportunities to discuss achievement, progress and strategies for growth and are held early in Terms 2 and 4, whilst the Year 12 Learning Conversations are conducted late in Terms 1, 2 and 3.

Parents/caregivers/homestays will be notified as to the dates and times and the process to select appointment times.

Individual teacher interviews can also be arranged at a negotiated time.

Promotion to the next year is dependent on the completion of a satisfactory year’s work.

We encourage parents/caregivers/homestays to contact the school should they have any concerns or grievances.

For classroom or subject related matters parents should contact either the subject teacher or Learning Area coordinator. If this issue is not resolved they can contact the Deputy Principal to share their grievance and negotiate a workable solution.

For issues that are not classroom related, parents should contact either the Connect teacher or Learning Community Leader. If the issue(s) remain we suggest parents contact the Principal or Deputy Principal.
